Chapter 16

Another Night

Devin watched Silver for a response. She’d hardly reacted during his explanation of his plan. If the drink she’d tossed back had any effect on her head, he couldn’t tell.

Silver leaned back with an expression of indifference. “So it comes down to this: I go to Rourke claiming Tenebrarum wants to buy what he’s selling, and your senior agent catches him in the act of committing treason?”

Devin nodded. “It’s as simple as that.”

“What makes you think this Rourke character won’t realize what you’re doing?”

“He believes me to be his puppet. An obedient, if resentful, pawn in his game. I’ve already done things for him I’d sworn never to do.” The image of Jane’s hurt expression—the combination of confusion and anger printed on her face before he’d stunned her—invaded his mind.

He felt Silver’s penetrating gaze examine him. She didn’t ask for specifics; she must have been able to glean whatever she needed to know through observing him. He found it somewhat amusing that she’d thought changing her hair and coloring could keep him from recognizing her. Hers was a face that had seared itself into his memory the instant she’d turned to him on that Kyderan rooftop.

Even at present, after speaking with her for almost an hour, he still found her striking in an almost demonic way. Sharp, wide-set eyes under arched eyebrows. Narrow, slightly upturned nose. Lips built for a sneer.

Yet he sensed something more than a gun-for-hire behind those sometimes green, sometimes blue, ever-changing eyes. Whatever it was, he couldn’t define it. He also couldn’t help feeling that despite her profession, she was one of the good ones.

Silver placed her elbows on her knees. “Why’d you call me, Pretender? Couldn’t find anyone else?”

Devin wondered why she continued calling him “Pretender” after he’d told her his name. I guess it’s rather fitting. He considered his answer. Unable to come up with anything else, he said, “Because you let Adam Palmer live.”

Silver’s lips curled into an expression of amused disdain. “I seem to recall you giving me an ultimatum. Walking away was just the smart thing to do.”

The coldness in her voice would have fooled most, but Devin had been wearing a façade of his own long enough to recognize hers. “The Tenebrarum never hesitate. You did. If I hadn’t been there, you still wouldn’t have pulled that trigger.”

Silver narrowed her eyes. “You assume much.”

Devin knew he wouldn’t get anywhere by pursuing the subject, so he simply asked again whether she wanted the job.

Silver’s expression relaxed as she considered the offer. Devin was sure she’d agree to it. She’d risk little by accepting. He would provide her with the cash to pay Rourke, so even if the plan failed, she could walk away with a slate full of ISARK schematics.

As he waited for her to respond, Devin couldn’t help glimpsing the small screen by her head, which displayed a view of the stage outside. The volume was set so low, the sound could barely be heard, yet he immediately
